The “comprehensive agreement” between Russia and North Korea, which included provisions for mutual defense, provides a model of what this new partnership could entail.
Sergei Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, said on Thursday 31st October that a treaty that Russia intends to sign soon with Iran will include a closer defense cooperation.
This formal alliance could enhance both nations’ abilities to circumvent international sanctions, project military power and provide Russia with additional resources to support its campaign against Ukraine. It could also strengthen Iran’s regional position in relation to Israel and Western interests.
Reuters reported that the military ties between these two countries are a cause of concern for the West, as Russia is waging war in Ukraine and Iran and Israel have been exchanging missiles and air strikes in Middle East.
Lavrov said on state television that the treaty establishing a comprehensive strategic alliance between Russia and Iran, which is currently being prepared, will be a major factor in strengthening Russian/Iranian relations.
He said that the agreement would be signed “in the near term”. Russia has said that it expects Iran President Masoud Peshkian will visit Moscow before the year’s end.
