Protest Leader Held at Police Station
Elene Khoshtaria, a leader of the “Coalition for Change,” was detained during a protest near Parliament yesterday. She is being held at the Didube Main Police Department.
Khoshtaria’s lawyer, Teona Zakaraia, visited her and said she is in good spirits. However, it’s unclear if Khoshtaria will be released after 48 hours or taken to court.
The reason for Khoshtaria’s detention is a dispute with police during the protest. Her lawyer says she didn’t break any laws and sees this as an attack on her right to protest.
“We can confirm that Elene Khoshtaria was detained under two articles of the law,” said Zakaraia. “She believes this is just another example of how the government tries to stop people from speaking out.”
