**Public Defender Meets Council of Europe Secretary General**
Georgia’s Public Defender, Levan Ioseliani, met with the Council of Europe’s Secretary General, Alain Berset, on March 27 in Strasbourg. They discussed Georgia’s human rights situation and recent legislative developments.
Ioseliani briefed Berset on freedom of media, expression, and assembly rights. He also talked about recent changes to laws and his opinions on these changes. First Deputy Public Defender Tamar Gvaramadze accompanied Ioseliani to the meeting.
The delegation also met with other high-ranking officials from the Council of Europe. This was not Ioseliani’s first meeting with Berset. Last year, Berset visited Georgia and held talks with government and opposition leaders.
During his visit, Berset announced that the Georgian Dream government agreed to form a working group to amend a law that had been criticized for being similar to Russian rules. However, President Salome Zurabishvili and others said this decision was made without consulting them.
