**Britain’s Sanctions on Georgian Politician a Form of Blackmail**
Levan Machavariani, an MP from the “Georgian Dream,” has spoken out against Britain’s decision to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili. In a statement, he said that the move is just another example of blackmail.
Ivanishvili has no assets in Britain, so it’s unclear what exactly he is being sanctioned for. Machavariani questioned why Britain didn’t explain its reasons for imposing sanctions. He stated that this is not the first time Ivanishvili has faced restrictions on his access to funds – a similar measure was taken three years ago.
**British Minister Addresses Human Rights Concerns**
The UK’s Minister for Europe, North America, and Overseas Territories, Stephen Doughty, expressed serious concern over the Georgian authorities‘ treatment of peaceful protesters. He stated that this behavior is completely unacceptable.
When asked about the possibility of sanctions against Ivanishvili, Doughty said that Britain continues to monitor the situation in Georgia closely. However, he refused to comment on potential future sanctions, citing the fact that doing so would reduce their impact.
**Machavariani Unfazed**
Machavariani expressed confidence that Ivanishvili’s position will not be changed by British sanctions. He stated that no matter what decisions Britain makes, they will not be able to influence Ivanishvili’s actions or make him take a step that goes against Georgia’s national interests.
