In a show of solidarity, libraries in Manchester and Ukraine were paired.
Manchester Libraries has partnered with the Lviv Regional Youth Library in order to share information on language, literature, and culture and to develop joint initiatives.
Councillor John Hacking, Manchester City Council executive member for Skills, Employment and Leisure, said: “We are proud of our Ukrainian community and have been eager to connect with them and show solidarity in this way.”
He said that libraries are “the bedrock for communities and an important resource to our young”.
Solidarity demonstration
The council stated that since the outbreak of war with Russia, “libraries have had to adapt to new conditions, supporting their communities’ mental well-being, countering misinformation and providing practical assistance”.
Manchester’s libraries are “Library of Sanctuary”, which recognizes and celebrates those libraries that go beyond the call of duty to welcome asylum seekers and refugees.
They “demonstrate solidarity and inclusivity, and the benefits of an welcoming culture for everyone”.
