Tea Tsulukiani, the current Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth in Georgia, has announced her resignation from the cabinet. She has been the longest-serving minister under the ruling Georgian Dream government, having previously served as the Minister of Justice from 2012 to 2020.
Tsulukiani, who is a lawyer by profession, has been a controversial figure in Georgian politics. She has been known for her attempts to exert party control over subordinate agencies and for making arbitrary staff dismissals, which have often led to protests and legal challenges.
Despite her loyalty to the ruling party, Tsulukiani’s decisions have been frequently challenged in court, with many applicants winning their cases against her. However, she did not give any specific reasons for her resignation, only stating that she was stepping down to prepare for her role as a Member of Parliament.
Tsulukiani is currently sixth on the Georgian Dream’s election list of MP candidates. She made the announcement of her resignation while attending a memorial evening, where she joked about her reputation as a “hooligan” and someone who “cannot keep her tongue.”
Her resignation comes as a surprise to many, as she had been expected to continue serving in the cabinet. It is unclear who will replace her as the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth. Tsulukiani’s last day in office will be tomorrow.
