General Mamuka Kurashvili spoke about the August war in Georgia. He said that if the country’s diplomatic efforts had been stronger, it might have been possible to avoid the conflict.
Kurashvili was asked if he thought there was a chance to avoid the war. He replied that before August 1, it was still possible. But after that date, he believed it was no longer an option.
According to Kurashvili, Georgia had skilled diplomats who could have helped negotiate with Russia. However, after August 1, things became too complicated and a stronger diplomatic effort would not have made a difference.
Kurashvili emphasized that Russia’s actions were aggressive and led directly to war. He suggested that if the diplomatic mission had been strengthened earlier, Georgia might have achieved a better result.
The general’s comments were part of a commission discussing the situation in occupied Georgian territories from 2004 to 2008 and the August 2008 war.
