Georgian MPs Return Home
Two Georgian Dream party MPs, Irakli Zarkua and Viktor Sanikidze, have returned to Georgia. They were involved in a physical altercation with a citizen named Lasha Gabitashvili on January 13 in Abu Dhabi.
The incident occurred at a hotel dining room. A video of the fight was shared online, showing MP Zarkua throwing food at Mr. Gabitashvili and physically confronting him. MP Sanikidze then got involved in the fight as well.
According to reports, the argument started because Mr. Gabitashvili had called MPs Zarkua and Sanikidze “Russian slaves” earlier. In a video message later released by Mr. Gabitashvili, he explained that the fight was related to this incident.
The two MPs were held at a police station in Abu Dhabi for a day and a half while they were investigated. They then stayed at a hotel until their legal proceedings were completed.
Georgian parliamentary majority leader Mamuka Mdinaradze has confirmed that both MPs have returned to Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. He stated that the two men were fined as a result of the incident, but did not provide an exact amount.
Mr. Mdinaradze emphasized that the MPs were not in custody and had been fined for their actions. He also stressed that violence can never be justified and that his own reaction to being attacked would be to respond.
