Georgian Politician Speaks Out Against New Law
Mamuka Mdinaradze, a top official in the Georgian government, has made some strong comments on social media. He says that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been told to call a US law “Russian” instead of its real name.
The law, called FARA, is meant to track foreign influence in the US. Mdinaradze claims that NGOs are being forced to refer to it as “Russian” because the government wants to discredit it. He wrote on social media: “It warmed up today… The new task didn’t take long, and the agents revealed themselves – FARA is also a Russian law… Now you don’t like American law?! There will be no justice? There will be no peace!”
NGOs and media groups have responded to Mdinaradze’s comments with a statement of their own. They say that FARA is a US law, and it does not restrict the activities of independent organizations. Instead, they claim that the government is trying to mislead people by calling it “Russian”.
