EU Threatens Sanctions Against Georgia
The European Union‘s ambassador to Georgia said that December 16-17 could be the dates when someone tries to punish the country. But a government official says they have already taken steps to prevent this.
Mamuka Mdinaradze, an executive secretary of the “Georgian Dream” party, spoke after a meeting with the majority in parliament. He said that by deciding not to open negotiations with the EU until 2028, the government has reduced the opposition‘s ability to cause unrest by a hundred times.
Mdinaradze claims that this decision has helped the government and reduced the resources of disorder among the opposition. He says they have taken steps to help those in the opposition who were planning something for December 16-17. By doing so, he believes they have reduced the potential for unrest.
The EU ambassador, Paweł Herczyński, had previously said that Georgia’s actions call for sanctions. He also mentioned that work is being done to prepare these sanctions.
