Estonia’s Parliament Chief Speaks Out on Georgia’s Constitutional Court Ruling

The Chairman of Estonia‘s Committee on Foreign Relations, Marko Mikhelson, has reacted to the decision made by Georgia’s Constitutional Court. The court refused to consider claims from President Salome Zourabichvili and 30 other politicians that the October 26 elections were unconstitutional.

In a statement, Marko Mikhelson expressed no surprise at the court’s decision. He believes it proves that only one institution in Georgia remains truly independent – the presidency. Mikhelson warns that this independence is under threat from “Georgian Dream” on December 14.

The meaning of Mikhelson’s warning is not clear, but his statement suggests that he sees a potential challenge to Georgian democracy coming soon.
