Serbian Protesters and EU Agree on Demands
The European Union‘s demands for Serbia are the same as those of protesters and students, according to Marta Kos, the EU’s enlargement commissioner. She made this statement in an interview with N1 Slovenia.
Kos was impressed by the energy and determination of the demonstrators who want change. She believes that Serbia is stagnating and needs to take many steps forward for negotiations to continue. The EU wants urgent reforms from Serbia, including changes to electoral legislation, media laws, and the appointment of electronic media regulators.
The Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, has given guarantees that these reforms will be implemented. Kos said she expressed her protest to Vucic about violence and intimidation towards non-governmental organizations.
Serbia currently does not have a government, according to Kos. She emphasized that the EU demands reforms from Serbia and that it is now up to them to implement these changes. Without these reforms, Serbia cannot progress on its path to European integration.
Kos also mentioned the importance of electoral system reform, which the protesters are demanding. She stated that this is a necessary step for Serbia’s development. Additionally, she highlighted the need for media freedom and respect for human rights.
The EU commissioner emphasized that any country not respecting media freedom, human rights, or non-governmental organizations cannot progress on its European path. She stressed that it is essential for countries to follow these principles for successful integration.
Regarding deadlines for key reforms, Kos replied that they should happen as soon as possible. Serbia aims to open the third cluster of negotiations by the end of the first half of this year, which requires implementing reforms within three to four weeks.
