Mate Devidze, a 20-year-old man, was locked up in prison as a precaution. This decision was made by Judge Davit Kurtanidze of the Tbilisi City Court.
The prosecutor’s office wanted to keep Devidze in prison because they thought he might try to hide or destroy evidence if he was released on bail. They also thought he might commit another crime or influence witnesses.
Devidze is accused of attacking police officers with a stick during a rally. The police say that as a result, the officers were injured in their hands, face, ring, and back. The prosecutor asked for Devidze to be kept in prison to prevent this from happening again.
However, Devidze’s lawyers disagree. They think he is innocent and should be released on bail of 2,000 GEL. They say that Devidze was not trying to resist the police and had no political motives for attending the rally.
Devidze was one of 16 people arrested by police during the rally. He was initially accused of disobeying a policeman and committing hooliganism, but after 48 hours, the charges were changed to investigate possible criminal behavior.
