Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, said at a press conference on November 4, 2024 that the U.S. supports the people in Georgia and their aspirations to Euro-Atlantic Integration and will not hesitate taking additional measures to respond to undemocratic actions by the ruling Georgian Dream Government.
Miller has once again highlighted the steps taken by the U.S. State Department to respond to the actions of Georgian government. “We have, as you are aware, reviewed… a significant amount of aid that we provide to Government of Georgia, and have suspended $95 millions of that assistance”, claims Spokesperson.
Miller added: “… “We will continue to examine whether there are any additional measures that would appropriate; and if they are, we won’t be hesitant to use them.” At that time he said he had no announcements to make regarding what additional sanctions the U.S. could take.
The elections in Georgia held on 26 October 2024, were marked by the policies of the ruling party. These included alleged misuses of public resources and voter intimidation. The opposition and President refused to acknowledge the official results. The coalition of opposition party announced non-stop demonstrations to demand new election during the rally on November 4, 2024. “We don’t recognize the stolen election and we don’t recognize the legitimacy of parliament,” said Giorgi Vashedze, a representative of one of opposition parties.
According to reports from local observers and the findings of OSCE/ODIHR, there were serious irregularities reported. Leading representatives from the European Union and United States call for a thorough investigation.
Only a few countries, including Azerbaijan and Armenia, Turkey, Hungary Iran, China, have recognized the results of the elections.
