**Russian Soldiers Killed in Ukraine: A Growing List**
More than 84,700 Russian soldiers have been confirmed dead since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. This is according to a joint investigation by BBC Russia and Mediazona.
Since their last update in December, the names of 2,711 more Russian soldiers have been added to the list of casualties. However, the actual number of deaths is likely much higher, as the information comes from public sources such as obituaries, social media posts, regional news reports, and statements from local authorities.
**2024 Could Be the Deadliest Year**
The investigation suggests that 2024 could be the “war‘s deadliest year” with over 20,000 confirmed deaths in just one year. However, it’s still too early to make final conclusions as more data on casualties continues to emerge.
**UK Estimates Russian Losses**
Meanwhile, the UK has estimated that Russian losses have exceeded 750,000 soldiers and are expected to surpass 1 million within six months. This is in line with estimates from Ukraine’s General Staff, which puts the number of troops lost since February 2022 at 772,280.
**Russian Gains Come at a High Cost**
Despite gaining ground in eastern Ukraine and Kursk Oblast in recent months, Russia has suffered heavy casualties. In November and December, Russian losses reached record highs, with a daily high of 2,030 troops lost in November.
**Moscow Keeps Casualty Figures Secret**
Russia does not disclose its casualty figures, but a Defense Ministry official recently revealed that the department received 48,000 requests to identify missing soldiers. President Volodymyr Zelensky has also confirmed that Ukraine had lost 43,000 soldiers on the battlefield since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
