**88,726 Russian Soldiers Identified as Killed in Ukraine**
Journalists from BBC Russia and Mediazona have identified the names of 88,726 Russian soldiers who died during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This number is based on a joint investigation by the two media outlets.
Since their last update in mid-December, the journalists have added 3,965 more Russian soldier names to the list of casualties. The actual figures are likely much higher, as the verified information comes from public sources such as obituaries, social media posts, and local authority statements.
The confirmed death toll includes:
* 20,200 volunteers
* 15,300 recruited prisoners
* 10,300 mobilized soldiers
* Over 4,600 officers
Russia has gained ground in eastern Ukraine and Kursk Oblast, but at the cost of heavy casualties. The journalists note that as Russian military equipment dwindles, commanders may be forced to provide less protective equipment to soldiers.
**Russia’s Total Losses Estimated**
As of January 17, Russia has lost a total of 815,820 troops since the full-scale invasion began, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. This estimate includes those killed, captured, wounded, and missing. Moscow does not disclose its casualty figures, but a Defense Ministry official recently revealed that the department received 48,000 requests to identify missing soldiers.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has estimated that Ukraine had lost 43,000 soldiers on the battlefield since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
