**Russian Soldier Death Toll Hits Grim Milestone**
The BBC and Mediazona, an independent Russian outlet, have identified the names of 100,001 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine. Since their last update in mid-March, they have added 2,007 more names to the list.
This marks a significant milestone for the project, which began when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. However, the journalists note that actual figures are likely much higher, as they rely on public sources such as obituaries and local media reports.
**Casualty Breakdown**
The confirmed death toll now includes:
* 24,200 volunteers
* 16,100 recruited prisoners
* 11,600 mobilized soldiers
* Over 4,800 officers
The journalists have faced criticism for their work, with some accusing them of spreading misinformation. They claim that this is a result of falsified obituaries and other tactics to discredit the project.
**Comparison with Other Estimates**
Other estimates put the number of Russian casualties much higher. President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed in February that Russia had lost around 250,000 soldiers, while Moscow has not disclosed its own casualty figures.
In an interview with NBC, Zelensky also said that over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 380,000 injured on the battlefield. Ukraine’s General Staff estimates that Russia has lost a total of 910,750 troops since the invasion began.
