**Russian Soldiers’ Death Toll Revealed**
The BBC and Mediazona, an independent outlet, have identified the names of 97,994 Russian soldiers who have died during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This number is based on public sources such as obituaries, social media posts by relatives, and statements from local authorities.
**More Names Added to the List**
Since the last update in late February, 2,000 more Russian soldiers’ names have been added to the list of casualties. The journalists note that the actual figures are likely much higher than reported. They are currently sifting through an additional 10,000 reports of Russian casualties.
**Breakdown of Confirmed Deaths**
The confirmed death toll includes:
* 23,700 volunteers
* 16,000 recruited prisoners
* 11,200 mobilized soldiers
* Over 4,800 officers
**Previous Estimates and Claims**
Independent media outlets Meduza and Mediazona estimated in February that around 165,000 Russian troops have been killed since the launch of the full-scale invasion. President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on February 15 that Moscow had lost around 250,000 soldiers.
**Russia‘s Casualty Figures Not Disclosed**
Russia does not disclose its casualty figures. However, a Defense Ministry official let slip in December that the department received 48,000 requests to identify missing soldiers.
