**EU Diplomat Claims China is Producing Lethal Aid for Russia**
The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, has reportedly told EU nations that there is “convincing” evidence of Chinese production of lethal aid to Russia. This comes ahead of an upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers.
According to German media outlet Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), the lethal aid in question refers to a Chinese firm’s role in producing attack drones for Russia to use against Ukraine. Reuters reported earlier that Russia has secretly established a development and production program in China for attack drones.
**EU Officials Cite Intelligence Sources**
A senior EU official told Politico that the EU has received reports from intelligence sources about a factory inside China producing drones shipped to Russia. The official said it’s unclear whether Beijing is aware of the firm’s drone production, but noted that it’s difficult to imagine such a project happening without government knowledge.
**China Denies Knowledge**
China’s foreign ministry has previously denied any knowledge of the project. However, Beijing has positioned itself as neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war while deepening economic ties with Moscow and backing the country against Western sanctions.
**Additional Sanctions Possible**
It’s unclear what concrete steps the EU will take in response to the reported drone production, but implementing additional sanctions may be on the table. This could include adding more Chinese companies to a list of firms facing EU sanctions.
