EU Braces for Potential Hungarian Veto on Russia Sanctions
The European Union is getting ready for a possible veto from Hungary on extending sanctions against Russia. These sanctions are set to expire on March 15.
Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been one of the strongest supporters of Russia in the EU. He has repeatedly opposed sending military aid to Ukraine and warned that Ukraine joining the EU would harm Hungary.
Recently, Orban did not try to block a statement from the European Council supporting Ukraine. Despite this, he still declined to sign it. The document was published with the support of 26 other member states.
EU diplomats are now wondering if Orban will veto the renewal of Russia sanctions. If he does, it could cause problems for the EU. The sanctions require unanimous approval from all 27 member states.
Hungary’s Prime Minister has a history of using his position to get what he wants. He has previously blocked efforts to sanction Russian leaders and got exemptions for Russian interests in Hungary.
The EU’s sanctions against Russia include economic measures and a list of people and organizations that are banned from traveling or having their assets frozen. If Hungary vetoes the renewal, it could lead to negotiations or even a lapse in enforcing the sanctions.
