Russian Court Sentences Lawyer to 7 Years in Prison for Criticizing Ukraine War
A Russian court has given prominent lawyer Dmitry Talantov a seven-year prison sentence. He was criticized for speaking out against the war on social media.
Talantov, who is 63 years old, was arrested two years ago and has been in jail ever since. The court found him guilty of spreading false information about the Russian military and inciting hatred.
Talantov posted comments on social media saying that Russia‘s invasion of Ukraine was wrong. He said he couldn’t stay silent after seeing a picture of an injured Ukrainian woman.
The court in Zavyalovo, Udmurtia, found Talantov guilty and gave him the seven-year sentence. Many people are being arrested for speaking out against the war.
Since the war began, over 1,100 people have been charged with crimes related to anti-war comments. About 340 of them are now in prison or in medical institutions.
