**Greece to Provide Ukraine with Anti-Aircraft Missiles**
Greece will send 24 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles to Ukraine to help defend against Russian aerial attacks. This was reported by the Greek news outlet Kathimerini on December 28.
The Sea Sparrows are short-range missiles made in the US that can be launched from the sea or ground to intercept cruise missiles or aircraft. Ukraine received its first batch of Sea Sparrows from the US in January 2023.
Greece will take these missiles from its naval and air force stockpiles, which have been deemed unnecessary for the country’s defense operations. The missiles have been in use for 40 years.
This is not the first time Greece has provided military assistance to Ukraine. In the past, it has supplied Ukraine with BMP-1 armored vehicles, small arms, and ammunition, as well as training Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets.
The Sea Sparrow transfer will not decrease Greece’s defense capabilities in the Aegean Sea, Kathimerini reported.
**Background**
Greece and Ukraine signed a bilateral security agreement in October. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has previously refused to send certain air defense systems to Ukraine, citing Greece’s own defense needs.
