**Russian Troops Ran Torture Chamber in Belarus**
Russian soldiers ran a torture chamber in the town of Naroulia, Belarus, in 2022. This is according to a report by the Belarusian Investigative Center (BIC) on November 28.
**Prisoners Held There**
The BIC reported that Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians abducted from Ukraine were held at the torture chamber. The chamber was located on land owned by the Belarusian government in Naroulia, not far from the border with Ukraine.
**Human Rights Activists Speak Out**
Human rights activists described the treatment of civilian hostages at the camp as “among the most brutal.” Lawyer Yulia Polekhina said that prisoners were tortured there. A former soldier who was captured and held at the camp also spoke out about the abuse he suffered.
“They beat up civilians really hard,” Bohdan Lysenko, a Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier, said in an interview with BIC. “You could hear constant screaming.”
**Investigation Reveals Details**
The investigation revealed that the torture chamber was located on property owned by Pripyatski Alyans, a company that conducts catering and food procurement for regional institutions. The company did not comment on the allegations.
**Russian Military Presence**
The Russian military was reportedly present at the location until early May 2022. This may indicate a violation of the Geneva Convention provisions, which prohibit forced displacement of civilians and ban keeping military personnel and civilians at the same detention center.
