Slovak National Party Demands Apology from Prime Minister Fico
The Slovak National Party has called on Prime Minister Robert Fico to apologize for supporting a UN resolution condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The party made this demand after Slovakia voted in favor of the resolution, which was approved by the UN General Assembly.
Slovakia joined 93 other countries in voting in support of the Ukrainian resolution, while 18 countries opposed it. The resolution reaffirms Ukraine’s territorial integrity and explicitly names Russia as the aggressor.
The Slovak National Party wants an investigation to determine who authorized the country’s representative at the UN to vote in this manner. They also emphasized that Slovakia must maintain a consistent stance on international issues.
Fico won the parliamentary elections in September 2023, marking his fourth time in power. Before his return, Slovakia was a strong supporter of Ukraine and provided military aid. However, Fico’s government has since reversed this policy, halting weapons deliveries to Ukraine and blaming the West for Russia’s war.
