Georgia’s Media Outlets Go on Strike
On January 14, dozens of Georgian television and online media outlets went on strike from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The decision was made in support of Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder and director of the Batumelebi newspaper. She was arrested and remanded in custody earlier that day.
Media Outlets Join Strike
A total of 43 media outlets participated in the strike. This included some of Georgia’s biggest opposition-leaning channels, such as Formula, TV Pirveli, and Mtavari. Other online platforms like Publika and Tabula also joined the strike. Some regional media outlets were also part of the protest.
Solidarity with Amaghlobeli
The Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) continued to operate as usual during the strike. However, one of its news anchors, Vasil Ivanov-Chikovani, showed solidarity with Mzia Amaghlobeli. He repeated a message of support for her eleven times during the evening newscast.
Another protest is planned for January 15 at 3 p.m., where businesses and enterprises across Georgia will join in. The strike comes as Georgia faces growing crisis and opposition to its government.
