Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has criticized the MEGOBARI Act, which was recently initiated in the US Congress. He called it the “DAUDZINEBELI” (Hostile) law and stated that it will not help improve the relationship between Georgia and the United States.
Kobakhidze believes that the act, which is being presented as a friendly gesture, is actually hostile and will damage the already strained relations between the two countries. He also accused the US of continuing to interfere in Georgia’s internal affairs, citing the two coup attempts in 2020 and 2021.
The MEGOBARI Act proposes sanctions against Georgian officials who are responsible for undermining democracy in the country. It also tasks US government agencies to report to Congress about any improper influence and sanctions evasion, as well as the presence of Russian intelligence assets in Georgia.
Kobakhidze urged everyone to act pragmatically and work towards improving the relationship between Georgia and the US. He believes that instead of focusing on further damaging the already broken relationship, efforts should be made to heal and restart it.
The MEGOBARI Act has sparked controversy in Georgia, with some viewing it as a necessary step to address issues of corruption and democratic backsliding, while others see it as a threat to the country’s sovereignty. The act is still being discussed in the US Congress and its final outcome is yet to be determined.
