**Banners in Belgrade Spark Tension**
A war of banners broke out on Tuesday in the Serbian capital, Belgrade. University students put up messages directed at the authorities, while men in black hoods responded with offensive messages.
The student banners were seen on a bridge across the highway in Belgrade. They read: “New Year, Old Demands – I’ll Explode – No New, You Still Owe Us for the Old.” These messages appeared on social media as well.
But later that day, someone placed a smaller banner over one of the student banners. This new banner said: “Croats Go Home, This is Serbia” and was written in Cyrillic script. This script is used by Serb nationalists, who view anything coming from Croatia as negative.
Belgrade University students denied that this message was theirs, saying they oppose it but can’t stop others from putting it up. The situation highlights tensions between student protesters and the authorities in Serbia.
