After a meeting in Strasbourg with Georgian opposition leaders, MEP Andrius Kublius said: “We have seen political provocations in relation to the Foreign Agents Law, and I believe there will be more.”
Kubilius said that the Georgians have a strong desire to be part of the European Union but that “unfortunately the Government is becoming a major obstacle [to this]”.
“It was an excellent meeting. We asked the Georgian representatives of the opposition how they viewed the situation, and what their plans and next steps were. We see that the Georgians have a strong desire to become part of the European Union, but unfortunately the government is the main obstacle.
“We have seen a lot of political provocations in relation to the Foreign Agents Law. I believe there will be even more. The pro-European Opposition is an alternative which can protect the interests and rights of the Georgians regarding EU membership. We discussed how they would do it, and what would happen after the next year’s election. We want to help the Georgians achieve their goal of European integration. Therefore, we are interested in seeing that the Georgian opposition offers an alternative, real route to the European Union,” said MEP.
Four opposition parties, Strategy Builder, Droa National Movement, Girchi More Freedom, and Droa held a meeting in Strasbourg with representatives of different political groups to discuss the issue of Georgian integration into Europe.
