EU’s “Stabilocracy” Policy Criticized by Croatian MEP
Tonino Picula, a member of the European Parliament from Croatia, has spoken out against the EU’s approach to the Western Balkans. In an interview with Croatian Radio (HR), Picula said that the EU often prioritizes stability over strengthening democratic institutions in countries like Serbia.
Picula claimed that the EU has given large amounts of money to countries in the region, but not enough support for building strong democracies. He described this approach as “stabilocracy”. This term refers to a policy where stability is valued above all else, even if it means sacrificing some democratic principles.
After visiting Serbia and meeting with government officials, opposition leaders, media representatives, NGOs, and businesspeople, Picula said that the country’s current crisis has no clear solution. Student protests have grown into a large movement calling for social change. However, the protest organizers are refusing to work with the official opposition or the authorities.
