Georgians Demand Democracy on the Streets
Every night, thousands of people in Georgia take to the streets. They want to make sure their country becomes a part of Europe.
A Dutch member of the European Parliament, Thijs Reuten, says that the current government came to power unfairly. He thinks they were helped by Russia and rich businessmen.
Reuten says that most Georgians don’t agree with the current government’s decision not to join the European Union. Even before the official results were announced, a Hungarian politician congratulated them on their win.
The Dutch MEP is asking the European Union to help the Georgian people. He wants the EU to impose penalties on the leaders of the current government and make sure new elections are fair.
Reuten also wants the EU to stop violence against protesters, activists, and journalists. He says that those who have been arrested should be released immediately.
