**Germany’s Chancellor Hopeful Vows to End Ukraine War**
Friedrich Merz, the top candidate to become Germany’s next chancellor, says he wants a swift end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. This comes after he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Davos.
Merz is running for the conservative CDU/CSU alliance in February’s parliamentary elections. He has criticized current Chancellor Olaf Scholz for not doing enough to support Ukraine and wants to provide long-range missiles.
**Ending the War**
Merz says Ukraine should “win the war” and be free to choose its own alliances. He believes victory means restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity with a democratically elected government in charge.
However, Merz also stresses that Germany should not get involved in the conflict. Despite this, he vows to support Ukraine with military aid.
