**European Parliament President Backs Georgian People**
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, spoke out in support of Georgia’s people during a session in Strasbourg on December 16.
Metsola condemned the violence against peaceful protesters and reiterated her solidarity with the Georgian people. She said that the actions taken by the government are “incompatible with Georgia’s EU path”.
The European Parliament has called for “decisive actions, including sanctions” against those responsible for the violations. Metsola urged all 27 member states to unite and agree on these measures.
She also invited Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili to speak in front of the European Parliament at a future session. The discussions on how and when she will speak are ongoing.
The EU’s door “will always remain open” to Georgia, Metsola said, emphasizing that the country has a European future ahead of it.
