British Ambassador Summoned Over Sanctions on Georgian Officials
The Georgian Foreign Ministry called in the British Ambassador, Gareth Ward, on December 20. This was because of the UK’s sanctions imposed on senior Georgian officials a day earlier.
These sanctions were put in place by the UK due to concerns about how the government treated peaceful protesters and opposition figures. The foreign minister of the ruling party, Maka Botchorishvili, expressed concern over these sanctions. She told the Ambassador that they would damage friendly relations between the two countries.
Botchorishvili also asked for a fair assessment of the current situation in Georgia. She hoped that relations between the Georgian and British Foreign Ministries would get back to normal soon.
