**Georgia’s Democracy at Risk**
Michael Carpenter, a high-ranking US official, has expressed concern about the state of democracy in Georgia. In an interview with the Voice of America, he said that everything Georgia has worked for over the years is now under threat.
The situation on the streets of Georgia is “appalling”, according to Carpenter. He mentioned violence and government-sponsored actors, known as “titushki”, who are attacking protesters, journalists, and students. This kind of behavior is not acceptable in a democratic country, he said.
Georgia’s hopes for joining the European Union and NATO, as well as its desire for security, prosperity, and integration with Europe and the West, are all at stake. Carpenter also mentioned that the US has limited its financial support to Georgia and suspended strategic partnerships due to these concerns.
