**Russian Hackers Target WhatsApp in New Tactic**
A Russian hacker group called Star Blizzard has launched a spear phishing campaign using the messaging platform WhatsApp. This is a change from their usual tactics, and Microsoft reported it in a blog post on January 16.
Star Blizzard sent invitations to join a WhatsApp group to people who work with Ukraine‘s government or research defense. They even impersonated U.S. government officials in emails asking recipients to join the group via QR code. The purpose of this campaign was to get access to targets’ WhatsApp accounts and steal their data.
**New Tactics, Old Goals**
This is the first time Star Blizzard has used WhatsApp for hacking. Microsoft thinks they may be changing tactics because previous methods have been exposed by cybersecurity efforts. This means that hackers are getting more creative in trying to trick people into giving them sensitive information.
**Cyber Warfare in Ukraine**
Russia’s hacker groups have been involved in various forms of cyber warfare during the full-scale war with Ukraine. These include attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure, interference in foreign elections, and hacks of civilian targets in Europe.
