Georgian Ex-President Speaks Out from Behind Bars
Georgian politician Mikheil Saakashvili says he has not seen the sun for almost four years. He made this statement during a court hearing, where he was speaking remotely.
Saakashvili said that his main punishment is being kept away from Georgia‘s sky and country, which he loves dearly. He claimed that he is being punished for saving Georgia’s statehood in 2008, along with the Georgian people and armed forces.
The former president also expressed sadness about not being able to visit his hometown of Batumi or drive through the highway he built. He said that even visiting his motherland, Samegrelo, was no longer possible without facing obstacles. Saakashvili stated that planes were forbidden from taking him on board, and if they did, authorities would redirect him to another country.
Saakashvili showed solidarity with those arrested at a rally, including journalist Mzia Amaglobeli. He emphasized the importance of peaceful demonstrations and freedom of speech.
Saakashvili’s words highlight his feelings of isolation and frustration at being kept away from Georgia for so long. His statements also serve as a reminder of his efforts to save the country in 2008 and his subsequent decision to hand over power peacefully in 2012.
