**Russian Airstrike Hits Nursing Home in Ukraine-Controlled Territory**
A Russian airstrike hit a nursing home in the Ukrainian-controlled town of Sudzha, Kursk Oblast, on January 11. The attack left one woman with severe arm injuries who later died.
According to Ukrainian military spokesperson Oleksii Dmytrashkivskyi, the nursing home suffered heavy damage, with all windows and doors blown out. Over 70 people were staying in the facility at the time of the attack.
“The question now is where to relocate these people,” Dmytrashkivskyi said. “Most are elderly, and many suffer from disabilities, Parkinson’s disease, post-stroke conditions, and one individual has a mental illness.”
The nursing home was previously visited by media, including the Kyiv Independent, on press tours of Sudzha organized by the Ukrainian military.
**Background: Renewed Offensives in Kursk Oblast**
Ukraine launched renewed offensive operations in Kursk Oblast days before the airstrike. The area is seen as a crucial bargaining chip for potential peace negotiations.
In August 2022, Ukrainian forces launched a large-scale operation in Kursk Oblast, allegedly capturing up to 1,300 square kilometers of Russian soil. Russia has since deployed reinforcements, including North Korean soldiers, and retook around half of the lost territory.
