Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Criticizes Georgia
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, spoke out about the situation in Georgia before a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels. He said that the current state of affairs in Georgia is not good.
Bettel stated that when Georgia was told it was close to joining the European Union and negotiations were opened, they made some wrong decisions. This led them away from their path towards Europe, he said. The Minister also pointed out that there are internal problems between the government and the president of Georgia.
A request not to recognize election results came from both the Georgian government and the president, Bettel said. He wants to see a report on whether the elections were fair or not, and if they reflect the will of the Georgian people. If so, he believes their will should be respected.
Bettel also made it clear that Europeans typically talk about sanctions and punishment when dealing with countries like Georgia. However, his main message was straightforward: there are rules to follow, and if these rules are ignored, consequences may follow.
