The Ministers of European Affairs and Foreign Affairs of 13 European Union countries have issued a statement to this effect.
The statement says that the “violation” of electoral integrity “doesn’t meet the standards expected” of a candidate to join the European Union and is a betrayal the legitimate European ambitions of the Georgian people.
In the same statement, the ministers also criticize Prime Minister Orbani for his “untimely” visit to Georgia, and point out that he is not speaking on behalf of the European Union.
“We are deeply worried about the current situation in Georgia. International observers noted violations both during the campaign and on election day. We condemn any violation of international standards for fair and free elections. We share their concerns, and we demand an impartial investigation into the complaints, and the elimination of violations identified. In these difficult times, we stand with Georgians. It is crucial that protests, and in particular the government’s reaction to them, are peaceful. The violation of electoral integrity is not up to the standards expected of a candidate for EU Membership. It is a betrayal to the legitimate European aspirations the Georgian people. The rule of law, and the holding of free and fair elections, are integral to any progress made by Georgia on its path to the European Union. We criticize Prime minister Orbani’s untimely Georgia visit. He does not speak for the European Union,” said the statement.
