The Belarusian Air Force shot down a Russian drone in the of the country overnight on October 20, according to the Belarusian Hajun monitoring group.
This is only the third time that a Belarusian aircraft shot down a drone in its airspace.
According to the monitoring team, three Russian attack drones began entering Belarus’ southern territory around 12:30 am local time.
Aircraft were scrambled around 1 am to intercept the drone near the town of Yelsk, in Homel Oblast. Residents reported hearing explosions.
The Air Force reported that 31 of 51 drones launched by Russia overnight were shot down. The Air Force also reported that 13 drones disappeared from Ukraine’s radar overnight.
Early September, Belarus’ military confirmed that a drone had been shot down over its territory for the first since the beginning of Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine.
Minsk never publicly voiced its objections to Moscow, its key ally, over the reported drone incidents.
According to Belarusian Hajun there have been several cases of Russian Shahed drones flying off-course to Belarus in the last few months, as drone attacks intensify.
