**Georgia’s Media Under Attack**
A group of over 40 media outlets, including Civil.ge, has released a joint statement condemning the attack on online publication Publika. The statement was issued in response to comments made by Shalva Papuashvili, the speaker of the Georgian parliament.
On February 1, Papuashvili accused Publika of “committing a criminal offense” for its reporting on a planned protest near Tbilisi Mall. He also took the opportunity to criticize the European Union, claiming that Publika is funded by the EU budget and implying that the EU Embassy bears responsibility for the consequences.
The media organizations stated that Papuashvili’s remarks represent an attempt to interfere with editorial independence and restrict the work of independent media outlets in Georgia. They also expressed solidarity with Publika, emphasizing its commitment to impartial reporting on events both within and outside the country.
**A Deteriorating Media Environment**
The statement comes as the media environment in Georgia continues to deteriorate. Local and international watchdogs have reported a significant decline in press freedom since November 2024. More than 90 journalists have been injured, harassed, or prevented from carrying out their duties. Mzia Amaglobeli, founder of online publications Batumelebi/Netgazeti, has been arrested on criminal charges and is currently on hunger strike.
Local and international organizations have condemned her arrest as politically motivated, and protests for her release continue.
