**Journalist Ends Hunger Strike**
Mzia Amaghlobeli, a journalist imprisoned in Georgia, has stopped her 38-day hunger strike. Her colleague Eter Turadze announced the end of the strike on February 18.
In a letter, Amaghlobeli wrote that she was ending her strike because she felt it would be selfish to keep doing so while children were suffering from tragedy and hardship. She thanked fellow prisoners Temur Katamadze and Nikoloz Javakhishvili for showing solidarity with her through their own hunger strikes.
Amaghlobeli’s family, friends, media representatives, and opposition parties had appealed to her to end the strike. They are concerned about her health and well-being.
**Background**
Mzia Amaghlobeli was arrested on January 12 and charged with assaulting a police officer. The charges relate to her slapping Batumi police chief Irakli Dgebuadze after he mistreated her in pre-trial detention. She was also charged with displaying stickers calling for a national strike.
Amaghlobeli’s next court hearing is scheduled for March 4. Her case has sparked widespread concern and calls for her release.
