Mzia Amaglobeli’s Lawyers Ask Court to Release Her
Lawyers for Mzia Amaglobeli have asked the court to let her go and stop a criminal case against her. They said this at a press conference in Tbilisi.
The lawyers, from the Young Lawyers Association, say that the Prosecutor‘s Office wrongly started a criminal case against Mzia Amaglobeli. They think the charges against her are unfair and that she was unfairly detained.
Mzia Amaglobeli is being held because of protests in Batumi last January. The protesters were trying to stop police from arresting someone else. But the police arrested some of the protesters, including Tsiala Katamadze.
The head of the Young Lawyers Association, Nona Kurdovanidze, said: “Mzia Amaglobeli’s lawyers will ask the court tomorrow to cancel her detention order. We think she was unfairly detained.”
Another lawyer for Mzia Amaglobeli, Maia Mtsariashvili, said that Mzia Amaglobeli is a political prisoner. She thinks the charges against her are not real.
Maia Mtsariashvili made seven demands to the Prosecutor’s Office and the Special Investigative Service:
* Stop the criminal case against Mzia Amaglobeli
* Release her from prison
* Properly investigate how she was treated unfairly by police
* Give her the status of a victim
* Prosecute Grigol Vashadze, who was in charge of police at the time
* Prosecute Irakli Dgebuadze for treating Mzia Amaglobeli unfairly and detaining someone else
* Prosecute all police officers involved in the unfair detention and prosecution of protesters
