Mark Rutte said that NATO must do more to help Ukraine to change the war’s course.
Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, warned in Politico that the appearance of North Korean troops in Europe was a historic turning point but for all wrong reasons.
This deployment marks the North Korean forces’ first military presence in Europe since the 1953 Korean War Armistice and their first combat operations since that time.
“These deepening economic and military ties between a reckless Russia, and a North Korea emboldened are not only dangerous to the Euro-Atlantic security and Indo-Pacific security but also for global security,” wrote he.
Rutte emphasized two important developments: North Korea’s supply of weapons to Russia and the deployment by Russia’s Kursk Oblast of troops.
“This dangerous expansion escalates the conflict and demonstrates that our safety is not regional, but global,” he said.
Rutte referred to the increasing war costs of Putin, with daily losses exceeding 600,000 personnel and approximately 1,200 personnel per day since February 2022.
The NATO chief stressed the need for Ukraine to receive a much greater level of support than it currently receives.
Rutte argued that “we need to raise costs for Putin and his autocratic allies.”
He concluded that the cost of supporting Ukraine is a fraction (a small price) of NATO’s annual budgets. “The real issue is: Can we afford to not do it?”
According to Ukraine’s intelligence services, around 11,000 North Korean soldiers have been training in eastern Russia to be deployed against Ukraine. South Korean intelligence has confirmed reports that Russia is training special forces from North Korea for combat in Ukraine.
