Politico reports that NATO is preparing a reshaping of its strategy towards Russia in recognition of the obsolescence and outdated nature of previous agreements.
Politico reports that NATO defense ministers are meeting next week to review the alliance’s longstanding policy towards Russia as a response to the growing threats posed by the Kremlin. A draft of the new strategy has not yet been released.
This move is in response to the deteriorating relationship between NATO and Russia.
According to Politico a senior US official stated that on 11 October 2024 it was time to “craft new strategy” in regards to the specific positions of the allies on Russia. The official stressed that the 1997 NATO/Russia Founding Act, and the NATO/Russia Council were “built for a different age,” suggesting that a fresh approach is needed to address the current situation.
This new strategy will be developed through several rounds of discussions at the ministerial level. The goal is for a finalized NATO strategy to be ready for approval at June 2025‘s NATO summit in The Hague.
NATO members have different approaches to a new strategy. A NATO diplomat revealed some countries’ concern that a new, aggressive strategy could destabilize Russia. Hungary and Slovakia are two NATO members that continue to maintain contact, recognizing the strategic value of engaging with Russia.
