NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte met with US President-elect Donald Trump in Florida on November 23. The meeting was to discuss security issues facing NATO.
Rutte and Trump talked about a range of security topics, but no details were given. They also discussed other national security matters. This includes the team that will be advising Trump when he takes office.
The meeting comes at a time when there are concerns that Trump’s second term may see less support for Ukraine’s war effort or even a lesser role played by the US in NATO. In February, Trump said Russia could do “whatever they want” to countries that don’t meet their financial obligations to NATO.
Despite this, allies remain optimistic that Trump will continue to support Ukraine and NATO. They believe that if efforts are framed as a demonstration of US strength, it will be more likely to happen.
Rutte had previously met with European leaders in Budapest on November 7. He backed Trump’s earlier attempts to get NATO countries to spend more on defense beyond the current target of 2% of GDP.
