US May Give Up NATO Leadership Role
The US is considering not leading NATO’s military operations in Europe, according to NBC News. This means the US would no longer be in charge of NATO’s military efforts.
Some officials are thinking that the US should reduce its commitments in Europe. This could lead to a change in who leads NATO’s military operations. Retired Admiral James Stavridis said that if the US gives up this role, it would lose influence within NATO and might even consider leaving the alliance altogether.
President Donald Trump has asked other countries to take on more responsibility for defending Europe. Some countries are spending less than 2% of their GDP on defense, which is the current target set by NATO.
Trump previously said that if countries don’t meet their defense obligations, they should be allowed to do as Russia wants. This was seen as a threat to NATO’s unity and stability.
The Pentagon has not commented on this possible change in leadership. It remains to be seen what will happen next.
