**Russia’s Military Operation in Ukraine: A Massive Scale**
Moscow is showing no signs of backing down from its aggressive posture in the region. A massive military operation, one of the largest of its kind in the 21st century, is currently underway.
According to Ukrainian officials, nearly 580,000 Russian soldiers are involved in combat operations against Ukraine’s forces. This staggering number was revealed by Major General Vadym Skibitsky, Deputy Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
**Russia’s Willingness to Sustain Heavy Casualties**
Despite suffering heavy losses, Russia seems determined to maintain its military operation despite high casualties. In fact, they are reportedly replenishing their losses at a similar rate. This means that Ukraine’s defensive needs will likely be challenging to meet.
Major General Skibitsky noted that these 580,000 Russian soldiers include troops currently engaged in combat operations against Ukrainian forces in the Kursk Oblast. Additionally, almost 35,000 Russian Guard troops are deployed in occupied Ukrainian territories.
**A Long and Bloody Conflict**
This large-scale military operation has been ongoing for several years. In June of this year, Vladimir Putin claimed that 700,000 Russian servicemen were engaged in military operations against Ukraine. By December of last year, that number had decreased to 610,000.
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) estimated that Russia loses around 20,000 personnel monthly in Ukraine. This number is roughly matched by the number of new soldiers Russia generates each month, indicating a cycle of constant replenishment and loss.
