Last week was a busy time in Georgia, with a lot of political events taking place. The United States imposed sanctions on 64 individuals for undermining democracy, including high-ranking officials from the ruling party. This caused anger from the Georgian Dream party, with the Prime Minister warning the US Ambassador that their relationship could be affected. The US is also preparing to impose sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the Georgian Dream party.
Meanwhile, a potential political alliance between Mamuka Khazaradze and ex-Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia fell apart, with both sides blaming each other. President Salome Zurabishvili commented on the situation, saying that a lack of trust and a conspiracy mindset hinder progress in the country. She also mentioned her Georgian Charter as a unifying platform for pro-Western parties.
In other news, there was an organized attack on opposition party members in Zugdidi, with video footage showing supporters of the ruling party physically assaulting and abusing them. Despite identifying some of the attackers and their connections to government officials, no one has been arrested yet.
On September 17, a controversial anti-LGBT+ legislation was passed. This has caused concern among the LGBTQ+ community, as it restricts their rights and freedoms.
