The opposition has canceled all planned picketing and joint protests against state institutions. The decision was made following today’s meeting of the United National Movement, where plans for anti-government demonstrations were discussed.
The opposition representatives have noted that the protests scheduled for today were postponed until after a deadline of two weeks set by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to allow for negotiations and the possibility to reach an agreement.
Tina Bokuchava is a member of United National Movement. She stated that the rally originally scheduled for 13 March has been rescheduled to 20 March, while the rest will be modified.
She said that tomorrow at 13:00 a procession from Republic Square will be held to Rustavi prison, where UNM Chairman Nika Melia, is serving a jail sentence.
“It’s very important to the United National Movement that all opposition groups act together, even in organizing protests.
Bokuchava stated that “at today’s UNM meeting, we discussed and agreed to modify the protests in order to ensure that Garibashvili Ivanishvili will not use the protests to disrupt the discussions initiated by the President Charles Michel of the European Council.”
Since the detention UNM Leader Nika Meelia, opposition parties and their supporters in Tbilisi have held demonstrations to protest the ruling of the incumbent Government.
